Down with the Act of Union

Another letter to The Daily Telegraph…

Sir,

Dr. Donald Boyd (letters, 28 April) regards the repeal of the Act of Union of 1707 as a threat to Scotland’s ‘Christian constitution’. Has he considered that the Act made possible over fifty years of persecution for Scottish Episcopalians and Catholics who, because of their religious conviction that an oath taken to James II (VII of Scotland) and his Stuart heirs could not be broken, suffered for their faith? Only if a Scottish Parliament repeals the Act of Union can Scotland put this dark past behind her.
